turism&travel : Outrigger canoe paddling launches in Polynesian Cultural Center's lagoon

LAIE, Hawaii – Adventurous individuals can get their feet wet trying out the official team sport of Hawaii, outrigger canoe paddling, right at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC).
Guests can now hop onboard one of five newly built four-person outrigger canoes and paddle their way through the PCC's winding lagoon with the help of an experienced paddler and guide.

“Outriggers, were the preferred craft of many Polynesians for daily life,” said Raymond Magalei, director of Marketing at the PCC. “Today, outrigger canoe racing has become a popular sport, with clubs located around the world. It was even named the official team sport of Hawaii in 1986. Guests can now experience the excitement and teamwork that goes into paddling in a beginner friendly and fun environment.”

Multiple canoes will be available for aspiring paddlers, and will run throughout the day from noon to 5:30 p.m., In addition to the already introduced cooking demos, umu making, coconut tree climbing, spear throwing and now canoe paddling, upcoming “Go Native!” activities include, Hawaiian quilt making and pareu (sarong) dying, and Te Here (forever) a Tahitian wedding celebration.
