Turism&Travel : Bastille Week revolution storms New York

Wednesday 08 June 2011

NEW YORK - Bastille Week in the Big Apple runs July 10-17, to celebrate another milestone of freedom, French Independence Day.
MPB Agency leads the campaign with “Why? We're French, take a guess.” Francophiles and friendly inhabitants of New York will unite for this week of petanque tournaments, street fairs, after work parties, culture nights, networking events and the first launch of French Restaurant Week.

“‘Unite' is the perfect word to symbolise Bastille Week. There will be cultural tastes of many areas of France: Paris, Bretagne, Alsace, South, Corsica,” said co-founder Severine Picquet, excited for the week to begin.

The Bastille Day Ball will bring many New Yorkers to its floor. Hosted by the Committee of French Speaking Societies over 95 non-profits organizations will be involved, including the Academie Culinaire de France, Association des Maitres Cuisiniers de France, Societe Culinaire Philantropique and the French-American Chamber of Commerce.

“While discussing the next Bastille Petanque Tournament over a glass of wine and charcuterie plate, we decided to gather French restaurants and plan events to celebrate Bastille Day widespread,” said George Forgeois, on the birth of the idea. Forgeois, also a renowned restaurant owner, is excited to organize another round of Petanque Tournaments after 9 years hosting them in Brooklyn at the Bar Tabac and 2 years in TriBeCa at the Cercle Rouge Restaurant.

The premium sponsors for Bastille Week are UbiFrance, the French Trade Commission, and the gourmet products supplier, Dartagnan, founded by Chef Ariane Daguin. The French Secretary of State for Foreign Trade, Pierre Lellouche, leads France's support of the festivities through its international campaign “So French, So Good.”

The French Restaurant Week focus on food honors the UNESCO's adoption of French gastronomy to world heritage week earlier this year. Each participating restaurant will feature its own selections for their Bastille Week menu, featuring works of all-star executive chef Ed Cotton, finalist on Top Chef, and the Master Chefs of France: Philippe Bertineau, Pierre Landet, Jean-Louis Gerin, Jean-Michel Bergougnoux, and Claude Gaudard. These unique combinations will be offered for a prix fixe of $17.89, mirroring the commencing year of the French Revolution.

The Bastille Week Launch Party Press event will be at the Cercle Rouge Restaurant on June 23rd, 6:30pm to 8:00pm. More information about events and the 35-plus participating restaurants can be found at Bastilleweek.com and FrenchRestaurantWeek.com.
