Turism&Travel : New York City's newest tourist trap - $69 hot dog

Thursday 29 July 2010

If you're looking for a tasty treat, there's nothing quite like a good old hot dog (especially if you grill it).
That's the spirit behind events like National Hot Dog Day (July 23 of last week) and why every year, people just chow down on hot dogs by the ton. That said, you've never had a hot dog like the $69 dollar hot dog debuted by New York restaurant Serendipity 3. It's the world's most expensive hot dog, and with good reason!

You start with a Ball Park foot-long hot dog. That's pretty standard for a New York City-style dirty water dog. However, then things get strange.

“It's not your typical Ball Park hot dog,” Serendipity 3 co-owner Joe Calderone said. “It's twelve inches of beef perfection, grilled in white truffle oil, and it's placed in a toasted pretzel bun that is toasted with white truffle butter, and then it's topped with medallion of duck fois gras with black truffles.” In defense of his dog, Calderone says, “You go to a steakhouse and there are $50-$60 steaks on the menu, so the price is not unreasonable. It can be split in two and people can enjoy because it is very rich.”

The first person to purchase one of the dogs was Trudy Tant, a 49-year-old woman from South Carolina.
