Turism&Travel : Mansion on Delaware a "Historic Hotels of America"

Saturday 22 October 2011

BUFFALO, N.
Y. - The Mansion on Delaware Avenue today announced its induction into Historic Hotels of America, an affiliate of The National Trust for Historic Preservation.

The luxury hotel is the Buffalo-Niagara Region's first facility to be admitted and one of only a dozen in New York State.

The hotel joins relatively few iconic hotels in New York with the designation, including the Waldorf-Astoria and The Plaza Hotel in Manhattan; the Sagamore on Lake George; and the Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. The announcement was made during the 2011 National Preservation Conference held this week in Buffalo.

"The hotel's inclusion in Historic Hotels of America spotlights Buffalo as a preeminent preservation destination in America," said Dennis Murphy, owner of The Mansion on Delaware Avenue. "This is a reflection of Buffalo's revitalization and we are honored to have inspired a movement that pushed Buffalo into a top-tier architectural travel destination."

The 1867 Buffalo mansion became a luxury class butler service hotel in 2001 after sitting dormant for more than 20 years.

"Our guests bask in the hotel's historic architectural splendor," added Geno Principe, proprietor. "And they return because of our renowned service by butlers who enjoy sharing in the history and stories of the fabled Mansion."

The Second Empire structure, designed by noted architect George Allison, was restored flawlessly and retains the prominent architectural detail of the period.

"Historic Hotels of America is delighted, and honored, to welcome The Mansion on Delaware Avenue as its newest member hotel," said Thierry Roch, executive director of Historic Hotels of America. "Our goal is to bring historically significant hotels and their experiences to the growing culture and heritage travel market. Each member hotel showcases its own rich history and encourages the value of historic preservation."

Nationally, the 235 member hotels include The Fairmont in San Francisco, CA; The Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, WV; Hotel Del Coronado in San Diego, CA; and Williamsburg Inn in Virginia, among others. The criteria for membership include that a hotel must be at least 50 years old; listed or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places or recognized locally as having historic significance; has faithfully maintained its historic integrity, architecture and ambiance; and provides a distinctive level of service.
