Turism&Travel : Olympic tourists irked by chainlink fence around cauldron

Tuesday 16 February 2010

But Olympic tourists in Vancouver who hoped to get a little closer to the Olympic flame are being sorely disappointed.

Hundreds of people, like Saskatchewan's Andrea Rempel, have expressed frustration they can't get near the cauldron in downtown Vancouver, because of the chainlink fence that surrounds the area.

In the photo to the right, you can see that Rempel could only get so close to the cauldron, which hockey legend Wayne Gretzky lit on Friday night. VANOC tells The Canadian Press that the fence is needed since the area also houses the international broadcast centre.

But the governing body now says it's trying to work out a way so that tourists can get better photos.
