Turism&Travel : Oberstar vows regulation push if Continental-United merger goes through

Thursday 17 June 2010

WASHINGTON - The U.
S. House Transportation Committee Chairman said Wednesday he would introduce legislation to step up regulation of the airline industry, should the Obama administration approve the planned merger of UAL Corp.'s United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc.

Rep. James Oberstar (D., Minn.), a longtime critic of airline-industry consolidation, made the comments at the close of an hours-long hearing on the merger.

Oberstar said he would do everything in his power to persuade the U.S. Justice Department to reject the merger plans, and if he didn't succeed, he would introduce a bill to tighten industry regulation, reversing steps the government took in the 1970s to deregulate airlines.

The Justice Department is reviewing the planned merger.
